Kashmir's Summer Capital

Srinagar

About Srinagar

Srinagar is the largest city and the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Known for its natural beauty, rich culture, and historical significance, Srinagar is often referred to as the "Venice of the East" because of its lakes and elaborate network of waterways.

A major tourist hub, especially during summer and autumn. Popular for trekking, skiing (nearby Gulmarg), boating, and cultural tourism. Best visited from April to October.

Geography & Climate

Located in the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Jhelum River, surrounded by the Himalayan mountains offering breathtaking views. Summers are mild and pleasant (May–August), while winters are cold with snowfall (December–February).

Dal Lake — Heart of Srinagar

Dal Lake is bustling with activity, dotted with houseboats, floating shops, Shikaras, and handicraft vendors. It's vibrant and colorful — ideal for cultural immersion. A Shikara ride is a must-do experience, letting you explore the lake's floating gardens, lotus beds, and the lively morning vegetable market.

Nagin Lake: A quieter alternative to Dal, offering a more peaceful experience with fewer tourists.

The Mughal Gardens

These gardens exemplify the Mughal mastery of landscape architecture, combining symmetry, waterworks, and the surrounding natural beauty of Kashmir.

Shalimar Bagh: Built by Emperor Jehangir in 1616 for his wife Nur Jahan. Four terraces, central water channel, and black marble banquet pavilion. Sound and light show runs May to October evenings.

Nishat Bagh: Built by Asaf Khan in 1633. The largest Mughal garden at 548m × 338m with 12 terraces symbolizing zodiac signs. Lined with cypress and chinar trees.

Chashma Shahi: The smallest Mughal garden, built in 1632. A medicinal spring feeds its fountains. The only Mughal garden in Srinagar with an entry fee.

Shankaracharya Temple

Also known as Jyesteshwara Temple, this is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in Srinagar. Perched atop Shankaracharya Hill at around 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the city, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Srinagar, Dal Lake, and the surrounding mountains. Originally constructed around 200 BC, possibly earlier. You need to climb around 200 steps to reach the temple after a scenic drive up the hill.

Culture & Cuisine

A blend of Kashmiri, Central Asian, and Persian influences. Renowned for handicrafts: Pashmina shawls, papier-mâché items, and handwoven carpets. Cuisine includes Rogan Josh, Yakhni, Dum Aloo, and the famous Wazwan — a traditional multi-course Kashmiri meal.

Best Time to Visit

About Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a scenic town and hill station in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the most popular travel destinations in the region, known for its snow-capped mountains, lush meadows, and adventure sports — especially skiing. The name "Gulmarg" means "Meadow of Flowers" in Persian.

Altitude: 2,650 metres (8,694 feet) above sea level. Located 50 km from Srinagar.

Gulmarg Gondola

One of the highest cable cars in the world. The Gondola takes you to Apharwat Peak at about 4,200 metres, offering panoramic views and access to the world-class skiing slopes. The ride itself is an unforgettable experience.

Khilanmarg

This smaller valley is about a 6-km walk from the Gulmarg bus stop. The meadow, carpeted with flowers in spring, is the site for Gulmarg's winter ski runs and offers a fine view of the surrounding peaks and over the Kashmir Valley. It's a 600-metre ascent from Gulmarg. If it's clear, you get a sweeping view from Nanga Parbat to the twin 7,100-metre peaks of Nun and Kun to the southeast.

Alpather Lake

Beyond Khilanmarg, 13-km from Gulmarg at the foot of the twin Apharwat peaks, this lake is frozen until mid-June. Even later in the year you can see lumps of ice floating in its cold waters. The walk follows a well-graded pony track over the 3,810 metre Apharwat ridge. For horse riding aficionados, Alpather Lake makes an exciting day's excursion.

Skiing in Gulmarg

In winter, Gulmarg becomes India's premier skiing resort. You don't need professional training or expensive equipment to start — Gulmarg is the ultimate beginner's skiing resort. Ski shops rent skis, sticks, and goggles. Ski instructors are readily available. The longest ski run is provided by the Gondola cable car — a run of 2,213 metres.

Other Attractions

Gulmarg Golf Course: One of the highest golf courses in the world, functional during summer. St. Mary's Church: A quaint British-era church amidst the hills. Ningli Nallah: A pretty mountain stream 8-km from Gulmarg, popular picnic spot.

Best Time to Visit

Winter (December–March): Ideal for snow activities and skiing. Summer (May–September): Perfect for sightseeing, trekking, and the greenery.

About Pahalgam

Pahalgam is a picturesque town in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, known for its lush valleys, snow-capped mountains, pine forests, and the Lidder River. It is often called the "Valley of Shepherds." Pahalgam is also one of the base camps for the sacred Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.

Baisaran — "Mini Switzerland"

This meadow, about 5-km from Pahalgam and 150m higher, provides excellent views over the town and the Lidder Valley. Pine forests and snow-clad mountains surround the grassy glen. One can hire ponies for the trek from near the centre of town.

Aru Valley

The little village of Aru is the first stage on the trek to Lidderwat and the Kolahoi Glacier. It makes an interesting day walk from Pahalgam, following the Lidder River for 11-km upstream. At Aru you'll often find Gujars living in log huts with their flocks, en route to higher pastures for the summer.

Betaab Valley

Named after the Bollywood film "Betaab," this lush valley with crystal-clear streams and dense pine forests is one of Pahalgam's most photographed spots. Located 15 km from Pahalgam town.

Chandanwari & Amarnath Yatra

Situated 16-km from Pahalgam, Chandanwari is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, which takes place every year in the month of Sawan. The destination is the Amarnath Cave, believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The cave is famous for a naturally formed ice Shivling that waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon.

Tulian Lake

Continuing 11-km beyond Baisaran, Tulian Lake sits at 3,353m — 1,200m higher up. It is covered in ice for much of the year and surrounded by peaks rising more than 300m above its shores. Accessible by pony trek.

Fishing in Pahalgam

Pahalgam is one of Kashmir's most popular trout fishing beats. The Lidder River is renowned for trout, though they tend to be small. Fishing licences are required. The daily catch limit is six fish.

Sonamarg Glacier
Meadow of Gold · Gateway to Ladakh

Sonamarg

Back to Home

About Sonamarg

Sonamarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold," is a stunning hill station in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, around 80 km northeast of Srinagar. It's famed for its glaciers, alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks, and as a gateway to the majestic Himalayan treks and the Amarnath Yatra.

At a height of 2,740m, Sonamarg is the last major point in the Kashmir Valley before the Zoji La pass into Ladakh. At the pass, the green lush Kashmiri landscape abruptly switches to the barren, dry landscape of Ladakh. Sonamarg is thus a good base for treks and a jumping-off point for trips into Ladakh.

Thajiwas Glacier

One of the most popular attractions from Sonamarg — a 4-km route to Thajiwas, a small valley at the foot of the Sonamarg glacier. Ponies can be hired for the trip. The walk leads up to the Shakhdar hill overlooking the glacier from the northeast.

Bisansar & Krishnasar Lakes

The road proceeds from Sonamarg to Bisansar Lake via Nichinai Pass. The Bisansar Lake sits at an altitude of 4,084m with lovely natural beauty. Beside it is the Krishnasar Lake at 3,801m — popular for trout fishing.

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

Sonamarg is the starting point of the famous Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, passing several mountain lakes — Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangabal. One of the most spectacular high-altitude treks in the world.

Nilagrad

A mountain river meets the Indus at the Baltic colony of Nilagrad, 6-km away from Sonamarg. The water is reddish in colour and locals believe it has curative powers. Inhabitants visit every Sunday to bathe in the river.

Best Time to Visit

May to September for lush green meadows, ideal for sightseeing and trekking. The Sindh River abounds with trout and Mahseer for fishing enthusiasts.

About Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is one of Kashmir's most secluded and stunning destinations, located in the Bandipora district of northern Jammu and Kashmir, near the Line of Control (LoC). Highlights

Dawar: The main town of Gurez, offering basic facilities and a great base for exploring the valley.

Habba Khatoon Peak & Spring: Named after the 16th-century Kashmiri poetess, this pyramid-shaped mountain is a majestic backdrop to the valley. The nearby spring is a popular tourist spot.

Kishanganga River: The lifeline of Gurez, this river winds through the valley and into Pakistan, offering beautiful riverside views.

Razdan Pass: The high-altitude mountain pass (~11,500 ft) you must cross to reach Gurez from Bandipora. Offers panoramic views of the Harmukh range.

Activities

Trekking & camping in Tulail Valley and along the Kishanganga River banks. Photography — Gurez's raw, rugged beauty is ideal for landscape and culture photography. Interaction with the Dard Tribe — the local Shina-speaking Dard ethnic group is known for their distinct customs and wooden homes. Trout fishing in the Kishanganga River (permits may be needed). Heritage exploration along the ancient Silk Route that once passed through this region.

How to Reach

Start from Srinagar, travel to Bandipora (~65 km), then cross Razdan Pass to reach Dawar, Gurez (~125 km total). Road conditions vary and travel is only possible in good weather due to landslides and military restrictions. Helicopter service is sometimes available from Srinagar to Dawar.

Best Time to Visit

Late May to early October. The valley remains cut off due to heavy snowfall from November to April. June to August is ideal for green meadows, mild weather, and cultural festivals.

Accommodation

Basic guesthouses, JKTDC huts, and homestays are available in Dawar and a few in Tulail. It's advised to carry cash, medicines, and basic supplies as facilities are limited.
