The complete J&K experience, from Dal Lake houseboats to Pangong's surreal blue shores
Ladakh sits at an average altitude of 3,500 metres. The air is genuinely thin up here and acclimatisation is not optional. We include a dedicated rest day in every Leh package for exactly this reason. Give your body 24 hours before you do anything strenuous and the rest of the trip will be far more comfortable.
The landscape is unlike anything else in India. High-altitude deserts, turquoise lakes that stretch into the horizon, Buddhist monasteries on impossible clifftops, and mountain passes that cross over 5,000 metres. June to September is the window when the roads are open, the skies are clear, and the valleys are at their best. Pangong Lake at 4,350 metres is the most photographed spot, but Nubra Valley's sand dunes, Turtuk village near the Pakistan border, and the monasteries of Thiksey and Diskit are all worth your full attention.
